A shop that delighted customers two years ago and has been silent since is not the same as one delighting them this month. A directory that ignores the difference sends people to the wrong door. So a fresh review is worth more than an old one — which also means the top spots have to be re-earned, not won once and kept forever.
Replying in public is the clearest signal a shopkeeper can give that he stands behind his work — a customer reading it learns more about the shop than any badge could tell them. It costs nothing but a minute, and it is the fastest way up the list for most shops.
